The choice of slabs: the second step towards the perfect project

People often think that it is enough to choose "the colour" or "the type of marble". In reality, the slab is a unique element, with its own veining and characteristics. For this reason, it is essential to be accompanied by those who know the material in depth: the marble cutter, the consultant, the supplier company.

The choice of slabs is a crucial moment in the realisation of a natural stone project. If the sampling serves to identify the right material, the selection of the slabs makes it possible to precisely control the aesthetics, quality and compatibility of the supplies with the project.

Working side by side with experienced professionals means making better-informed choices, avoiding mistakes during installation and achieving a result consistent with initial expectations.

What is a natural stone slab and what it is used for

A slab is a flat section cut from a block of natural stone. It is generally 2 to 3 cm thick, although different thicknesses are available depending on design requirements.

The slab is the starting element from which floors, wall claddings, kitchen tops, sinks, decorative walls and much more are made. Each slab is different, which is why it must be selected carefully, based on the desired aesthetics, intended use and technical characteristics.

How to choose natural stone slabs correctly

Contact the company that supplies the raw material, or write to our Consortium to get a broader overview: it is important to interface with the manufacturer, the salesperson or our company to find out the availability and supply possibilities of the material you are looking for. If the choice of material was made by evaluation of a sampling, continue the project process with the company that followed you in the first phase.

In this second phase, expert figures come into play to help you:

  1. Check the correspondence with the samples received: that is, compare the available slabs with the approved samples in order to maintain the chromatic and material consistency of the project.
  2. Observe the slabs according to three parameters:
    • chromatic continuity;
    • course, direction of the veins;
    • presence of natural inhomogeneities, which are part of the peculiar characteristics of natural stone and therefore do not constitute defects, but rather the authentic element that that slab possesses.
  3. Checking the sequence for open-spot laying (if required): if the project calls for open-spot laying, they take care of marking the order on the edge so that those who will later lay them can find the information (they are usually also numbered).
  4. Create a photo documentation: they take photos of the chosen slabs, so that they are useful for later comparison with the customer or with you, in order to have an optimal handling on site.
  5. Compare the material with the material board: i.e. they view the colour match of the selected slabs with the other materials in the project (such as wood, metal, textiles, etc.).

The laying methods: random, open spot, box or running.

The choice of slabs should also be reasoned according to the type of laying you intend to carry out:

  • Open-spot laying: the natural veining is opened and mirrored between two adjoining slabs, creating an extremely scenic "book-like" effect. It requires slabs cut in sequence from the same block and careful selection.
  • Box laying: the slab is divided into precise portions, like a mosaic. It is an elegant solution, often used to create geometric or repetitive compositions.
  • Running laying: the slabs are laid staggered, creating a dynamic and contemporary visual movement.

The laying method has a profound influence on the final effect of the design and must be chosen carefully when selecting the slabs.

Attentions not to be underestimated

Anyone buying or commissioning a natural stone project must be aware that each slab has its own characteristics. Colour inhomogeneities, irregular veining or random natural elements are not defects, but hallmarks of the natural material.

Furthermore, the waste factor must be considered: the more complex the project is or requires precise cuts, the greater the amount of 'excess' material to be calculated, and this factor affects the final cost.

Therefore, relying on competent people, sharing doubts and expectations, and planning every detail together will ensure that the path is clear and the result more satisfactory.

Choosing natural stone is a gesture of awareness. It means accepting its authentic beauty, designing with care and building something that lasts. But, above all, it means not being alone: the stonemason is at your side, to transform an extraordinary material into a perfect project.
